چکیده

INTRODUCTION The surgical repair of traumatic tears of the meniscus may enhance tissue remodeling, help to maintain the stability of the knee joint, and prevent osteoarthritic changes. After repair of the experimentally lacerated meniscus, treatment by intra-articular injections of hyaluronan (HA) has been shown to enhance meniscal remodeling [2]. HA treatment also appears to slow the degeneration of cartilage following experimental transection of the anterior cruciate ligament [3]. Clinical experience indicates cartilage damage leads to degeneration of the apposing and surrounding articular cartilage. We hypothesized that meniscal injury may have similar deleterious effects on the articular cartilage of the tibial plateau and femoral condyle, and that administration of HA may attenuate this effect. The objectives of this study were to determine the extent of degeneration of the femorotibial articular cartilage surfaces in the rabbit knee, and the effect of HA treatment on the cartilage after meniscal repair, using digital video image analysis after Indian Ink staining [1].

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) of 30mW with a Gallium Aluminum Arsenide (GaAlAs) diode laser device (830nm) on bone repair in the tibia of the rabbit, histological study. Materials and Methods: In this study, 24 male adult rabbits were randomly selected and anesthetized, then incision was made on the skin and deep fascia of...

Meniscal Roots: Current Concepts Review

Meniscal root tears are defined as radial tears located within 1 cm from the meniscal attachment or a bony rootavulsion. This injury is biomechanically comparable to a total meniscectomy, leading to compromised hoop stressesresulting in decreased tibiofemoral contact area and increased contact pressures in the involved compartment. These changes are detrimental to the articular cartilage and ult...

Clinical Results of Meniscal Repair Using Submeniscal Horizontal Sutures

Background:  Parts of the implants placed over the meniscus during meniscal repair can wear down the cartilage in the contact zones and cause chronic synovitis. Placing horizontal sutures under the meniscus may overcome this potential hazard. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the midterm results of arthroscopic meniscal repair using submeniscally placed out-in horizontal sut...

Meniscus Induced Cartilaginous Damage and Non-linear Gross Anatomical Progression of Early-stage Osteoarthritis in a Canine Model

BACKGROUND The predictable outcome of the anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) canine model, and the similarity to naturally occurring osteoarthritis (OA) in humans, provide a translatable method for studying OA. Still, evidence of direct meniscus-induced cartilaginous damage has not been identified, and gross-anatomical blinded scoring of early-stage OA has not been performed. OBJEC...
